as someone who always considered herself terrified of large groups of small children, and who has a college degree in secondary education, i can't help but laugh at something that i found myself doing today.
one of my classes was getting a bit out of hand, so i decided to implement some sort of discipline system. when i taught high school, this system was usually 'sit down and stop talking NOW or i'll throw you out' the first time, and actually throwing them out the second time. that will not wash with taiwanese 8-yr olds. i was wracking my brain thinking of some way to handle little kids...the only thing i could think of was my own elementary school teachers: and the pulling cards system.
i couldn't help but laugh at myself today sitting in my office colouring everyone's names on their pockets in brightly coloured crayons, making sure they looked like something an elementary school teacher would be proud of. i cut out their cards (green, yellow, and red...like a stop light) and will finish it tomorrow and see how it works. those little buggers are cute as they can be, and they make my day, but they are also still only 8...and thus unstoppable sometimes!
