now i can tick "going to the doctor" off the list of things to do in taiwan.
i had been feeling not 100% for a few days, and some of my students and coworkers had been out sick lately, but i didn't think anything of it. that is, until i woke up this morning and thought i was experiencing my last hours on earth. (not really, but i was reeeeeeeeally sick). so, i called ally and asked her to take me to the doctor.
i was so scared, because #1 i have a really irrational fear of any doctor, anywhere and #2 because i'm always scared that they are going to say "actually you have a terrible and incurable disease and you have 6 hours left to live" and #3 because i'm in taiwan and i had no idea what was going to happen.
anyway, i get there, pay my $150nt (which is about $5usd-covers the visit and all the 2039482340 pills he made me take- so cheap! and i felt so cool, showing my taiwanese insurance card) and he asked me my symptoms, i told him, and then he proceeds to tell me that i do have a virus that is going around taiwan right now, and taiwan is very small and crowded and that it was pretty inevitable that i would catch it. he told me that i was going to live to tell about it (because i asked him about 2034820 times if i was dying) and that i should take a rest and then take all the medicine he had given me, and not to eat anything, and to drink only water. soooooo today i stayed home from work and slept all day. i still don't feel excellent, but i think the medicine is helping a lot and that i will indeed live to tell about it.
so, i will chalk this up to cultural experience and just hope hope hope that i never get sick again. bleh.
