the title of this post is slightly ironic. this day actually started off terribly...i overslept and then i didnt get to eat lunch and tuesday is the loooooooooongest day ever and it was soooooooo hot and rainy and the only clean clothes i had didnt really match (yes i wore them anyway), and there was of course some life drama going on as well. i was also unexplainably homesick when i woke up...i dont really know. sometimes you just wake up in a bad mood no matter where you are! i even randomly started to cry at work...it was just one of those days, and 'those days' are 2390483 times worse when you are in a foreign place and having friend problems too.
when i finally came home from work, i went in the back door of my apartment complex and happened to pass by the mailboxes. i looked in mine and saw a package sticking out! it was addressed in familiar handwriting from fuquay-varina...IT WAS FROM MY FRIEND HOPE! i was sooooooo happy. inside was lots of good stuff and a letter. the letter, needless to say, was exactly what i needed to hear! =) it was soooooo good to hear from her, and to hear what she had to say! it also made me really nostalgic...but in a good way! ah i miss the ihouse so much and am very gutted that i wont be returning this year! but as she reminded me, god is using me in taiwan now! =) and yes, thats amazing. THANK YOU HOPE! i love you! you totally turned my day around!!!!!!!!!!
today at work i got 3 more new classes. a reader class (where we work on vocab and grammar by reading), a grade 5ish class, and a kindergarten. one of my students got her hair cut off really short and it was so cute...however, another student wouldn't stop telling her (in chinese of course) that it looked like a pumpkin! i couldnt stop laughing. and today one of my students told me the absolute most profound thing ive ever heard in my life, truly. we were talking about rules and what rules mean. i cant remember the exact trajectory of the conversation, but she said, 'teeecha, if something is stupid, we shouldnt do it.' OH MY GOSH! how many of my lifes problems would never have occurred if i just hadnt done something stupid? how much trouble could i have save myself if i didnt do stupid things? how many of the worlds problems would be solved if people didnt act like idiots? how many relationship problems would easily take care of themselves if one or both parties just wouldnt be stupid?!? i think thats good advice for everyone: if its stupid, dont do it. its also amazing to me that no matter how bad a day youre having, or even if you were crying a few minutes earlier, you can come downstairs into a roomful of screaming 8 year olds who are chanting your name and running up to you and pulling your hair and hugging you and saying things to you in a language you cant understand very well...and suddenly, the world is ok and home doesnt seem quite so far away and 11 more months suddenly dont seem like near enough.
right now i am listening to some reggaeton/salsa that hope sent me and im about to die to go salsa. i think after i finish writing this, im going to turn it up very loudly and dance by myself. im getting out of practice! id swap a months pay for 10 minutes in artistika. for real.
this is my prayer in the desert
when all that is in me feels dry
this is my prayer in my hunger and need
my god is a god who provides
all of my life
in every season
you are still god, i still have a reason to sing
